Salary and benefits

We attract, develop, and reward the best talent because our people are at the heart of everything that we do.

We offer a comprehensive reward package for staff at all levels. As a department of the University of Cambridge, we follow their pay scales and pension plans. Our staff can access competitive benefits such as health care cash plans, childcare schemes, a cycle to work scheme, electric vehicle sacrifice scheme, and shopping and insurance discounts. Staff also enjoy membership at the Frank Lee Sports Centre, located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, as well as subsidised food at our onsite café.

We have a range of benefits available through the University of Cambridge to support staff who need to move to Cambridge, including the Accommodation Service and a Newcomer and Visiting Scholars programme. Relocation reimbursement support can also be possible.

The Institute is made up of a wide variety of roles, from technicians to administrative staff. We support flexible and hybrid working arrangements wherever possible and work with individuals to understand and support their needs.

Culture and community

We have a vibrant and inclusive workplace, creating an environment where every individual can thrive.

Our culture of respect and fairness is guided by the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee which ensures all voices have a platform to be heard. The University of Cambridge also offers several diversity networks, providing forums, networking opportunities, and the ability to contribute to policy development and implementation.

We support social interactions and community building through a variety of activities and events. Our “Social Fairies” organise family-friendly events, such as a Christmas market, open mic nights, and the annual Summer Fair. New starters can join staff-led clubs and groups, including the Gardening Club, Green Impact team, and the Postdoc Society. On Fridays, our teams take turns hosting evening socials with themes from karaoke to retro gaming.

Wellbeing

We work together with the University of Cambridge to provide a comprehensive wellbeing programme to promote good mental health and life-work balance.

Our Mental Health First Aiders programme trains members of staff to serve as the first point of contact for their colleagues, to listen without judgement, provide peer support and signpost them to the different routes of help available.

Through the University, all staff and students can access the University’s Sports Centre, Counselling Service, and Occupational Health teams to support their physical and mental wellbeing.

Institute members are able to take part in a range of wellness activities coordinated by our HR team, the School of Clinical Medicine and Cambridge Biomedical Campus, such as sketching classes, nature walks, massages and games in our common areas. Staff and students can also join the Frank Lee Centre, a health and fitness facility on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus which includes a gym, swimming pool, indoor and outdoor sports courts, bar, and restaurant.

Training and development

We support a culture of lifelong learning, focusing on empowering staff to take ownership of their development, build expertise in their area of responsibility, and work effectively with others.

The University offers a wide range of training to support professional development, from the Postgraduate Researcher Development Programme and Postdoc Academy to train future scientific leaders, to the Administrator and Strategic Development Programmes to support our operational staff to develop their careers.

All staff and students can access LinkedIn Learning as well as the Universities Personal and Professional Development training database to find courses on topics such as communication, leadership, compliance and productivity.

Alongside on-the-job training, we are also able to provide opportunities for staff at all stages of their career to gain professional qualifications relevant to their role, from certified courses through to master’s degrees. x
