Active Pixel CMOS-Based Radiation Detectors

Abstract:
This chapter provides a thorough description of active pixel complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-based radiation detectors. The pixel architecture of scientific active pixel CMOS sensors, a fundamental block of this detector technology, is displayed and analyzed. Detailed explanation of the function and the electro-optical properties of the active pixel CMOS sensor supported by plots and diagrams are provided to enable understanding of the basic properties of this detector technology. Subsequently, the main advantages of this detector technology along with the key physical characteristics of active pixel CMOS-based radiation detectors, evaluated in the radiographic energy range, are presented. Their performance evaluation in absolute units, as presented here, reveals the fundamental properties of this technology and its potential benefits for general as well as more specific radiographic applications. Finally, present and future applications of this detector technology in medicine and biology are discussed.
