A practical guide to in vivo spectroscopy

Abstract:
The overall work of which this forms a part contains highly detailed articles on specific methods, hardware, and applications of magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy (MRS). This article sets out to give context to the other articles by describing in practical terms how in vivo MRS is carried out, with emphasis on the layout of an MR unit, essential safety measures, and the various pieces of equipment required for a scan. The concept of a pulse sequence and the generation of its individual elements are introduced, with a brief guide to the key sequences used in vivo and recommendations on which sequence to use. Both clinical and preclinical (animal) studies are discussed.
