A clinically compatible hyperspectral endoscope for human studies.
- Abstract:
- Detection of precancerous lesions is critical for triage in Barrett’s oesophagus, but standard-of-care white light endoscopy often lacks the necessary contrast [ Clin. Gastroenterol. Hepatol. 20 , 2514 ( 2022 ) 10.1016/j.cgh.2022.01.060 ; J. Clin. Pathol. 76 , 847 , ( 2023 ) 10.1136/jcp-2022-208524 ]. We developed a "proof-of-principle" Hyperspectral Endoscopy (HySE) system to acquire high-fidelity hyperspectral data from humans in vivo . The system delivers a multiplexed 16-wavelength sweep (450–650 nm) through a clinically approved commercial endoscope, using a supercontinuum laser and acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) synchronised to the chip-on-tip camera. Custom registration and unmixing algorithms were co-developed with the HySE system. Characterisation with a calibrated colour chart demonstrated adequate spectral fidelity while peristaltic and cardiac motion were effectively mitigated from preliminary in vivo data using the implemented co-registration method, suggesting suitable performance for testing the potential of hyperspectral imaging to improve precancerous lesion contrast in human clinical trials.
