Research Assistant (RICS Core)

Job Description:

The CRUK Cambridge Institute (CRUK-CI) Research Instrumentation and Cell Services (RICS) Core Facility requires a talented research assistant who will deliver exemplary Cell Services to the Institute, providing practical support for cell line quality control testing services, cryostorage facility and cell culture training programmes offered by the Core.

The RICS Core Facility provides access to a wide range of high-end laboratory instrumentation and specialised cell services. We support researchers at the Cambridge Institute, as well as many other University Institutes and Departments both locally and nationally.

This role is for the service provision of the Cell Services side of the RICS Core Facility. The role holder will be responsible for performing the routine Cell Services provided by the Core, providing support for the three Cell Services laboratories (RICS's tissue culture training room, quarantine tissue culture room and Cryostorage facility) and assisting the Cell Services Principal Scientific Associate in offering advice, training and technical expertise on cell culture technique to a wide user base. The role holder will also assist in developing new Cell Services workflows and techniques to improve services offered and work collaboratively with users to provide input to experimental design.

About you: Educated to Degree level or with equivalent experience in a relevant scientific laboratory, good practical knowledge of a broad range of laboratory techniques with the ability to interpret data for quality control and troubleshooting, as well as good hands-on laboratory experience in cell culture technique. You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with staff at all levels, including those external to the Institute.

This is a laboratory-based role where you will be directly responsible for carrying out RICS's Cell Services provision, including running the weekly cell culture quality control tests and ensuring samples are safely banked in and retrieved from the Institute's cryostorage facility. Experience of tissue culture techniques is highly desirable, as is database management. You need to be highly organised with excellent attention to detail, have a flexible and cooperative approach to work, and work well in a team.

The appointment will be made on a permanent basis which relies on availability of external funds which are not part of the University's central revenues. In the event that this funding should cease, your post may be at risk of redundancy.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
