As a Research Associate, you will have the unique opportunity to lead a project that bridges the Narita lab (Ageing, Senescence) and our specialised Genome Editing facility (CRISPR, animal models). This project is funded by the CRUK Pioneer Award, which funds revolutionary, game changing ideas. You will design a CRISPR-based barcoding strategy and apply this to mouse Embryonic Stem cells (mESCs), with the ultimate goal of uncovering key attributes that allow a stem cell to become a model organism.

Key areas of the project:

  • Molecular barcoding (CASpicr): developing a next-generation CRISPR-based barcoding strategy and applying this to mESCs
  • Feature recognition: use cutting edge single cell and computational approaches (transcriptome, epigenome and genome) to define features that report a cell’s ability to form an organism
  • Biomarker development: develop a non-invasive biomarker to detect these epigenotypes in naïve populations of stem cells

You will work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative and innovative environment. Collaborating with world leaders in single cell sequencing (Dr Wolf Reik, Babraham Institute) and in single cell analysis (Dr John Marioni, CRUK Cambridge Institute).

This position will suit a scientist with strong molecular and computational biology expertise, who desires to apply their skills to a paradigm-shifting, translational project.

Key Requirements:
Computational approaches:

  • Experience of the manipulation and analysis of NGS datasets (eg R/Python)
  • Fluency in computation and statistical theory

Molecular expertise:

  • Strong cloning background (eg Gibson Assembly)
  • Lentiviral experience

Cell culture:

  • Expertise in cell culture (mouse ES cell culture an advantage)

A PhD or relevant qualification; Excellent and effective communication skills.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
