Programme overview

We are excited to offer an opportunity for Year 12 students to gain hands-on experience within our Grants Department at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK-CI). This work experience placement will provide valuable insights into the processes and systems involved in securing and managing research funding that supports world-leading cancer research.

What you will do

During the placement, students will have the chance to:

  • Observe and support grants administration processes: Learn how funding applications are prepared and submitted, including proofing non-science sections and understanding key funding guidelines.
  • Assist in identifying funding opportunities: Support the team in researching funding opportunities suitable for different research groups.
  • Learn about budget management: Observe the process of building research budgets that align with funder guidelines while ensuring accurate costings.
  • Understand compliance and financial monitoring: Gain exposure to how research spending is monitored and reported to funders.
  • Assist with data organisation: Work with anonymised or simulated data to learn about grant record-keeping and reporting processes.
  • Support general administrative tasks: Participate in tasks such as updating templates, reviewing guidelines, and contributing to team planning activities.

Important Note
Students will work only with simulated or anonymised data to ensure GDPR compliance and will not have access to any personal or sensitive information.

This placement will allow students to:

  • Develop skills in organisation, research, and teamwork.
  • Understand the vital role grants play in funding cancer research.
  • Observe how financial planning and compliance contribute to the success of scientific research.

About the Department

The Grants Department at CRUK CI provides critical support to Group Leaders, scientists, and students by helping them secure and manage external research funding. The team ensures funding applications are competitive, compliant, and financially sound, while also overseeing grant finances to ensure spending aligns with funder terms and conditions.
