de la Roche Group
Programme overview
We are excited to offer an opportunity for Year 12 students to gain hands-on experience within the De La Roche lab at the CRUK Cambridge Institute! This work experience placement aims to provide insight into the day-to-day activities and research we conduct, giving students a real feel for what it’s like to work in our field.
What you will do
During the placement, students will have the chance to:
Observe and participate in basic lab experiments, such as animal tissue processing, cell culture, DNA isolation, amplification through PCR and visualisation through electrophoresis, as well as data generation & analysis.
Work alongside experienced professionals, investigating how the immune system works and how it can be targeted for therapies in the setting of cancer. Learn about potential career paths in science.
Engage in seminars & scientific discussions to develop skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking.
About the lab
Our lab specialises in studying the immune system within the cancer context, with focus in a cancer-dysregulated pathway – the Hedgehog Signalling pathway. We aim to investigate this pathway’s basic biology and how to harness it for therapeutics.
What to expect
This placement is designed to be an immersive and interactive experience, allowing students to develop a better understanding of the work done in our department. Students should be prepared to engage actively and show enthusiasm for learning.
Additional Information: No prior knowledge of cancer biology or immunology is required. The reasoning behind our scientific approach will be explained to students throughout this experience. We would also be very happy to share more information about our background and our experience in the field of research!
We look forward to welcoming students and providing them with a valuable experience!
