Biological Resource Unit
Programme Overview
We’re excited to offer Year 12 students the chance to gain hands-on experience in our Biological Resource Unit, where we use rodent models to study cancer. This work experience placement is designed to give you a real look at the daily work and research we do and show how our efforts support Cancer Research UK’s goal of creating a world where everyone can live longer, healthier lives without the fear of cancer.
What you will do
During this placement, you’ll get to:
- See and join in on daily activities in our animal facility, where we care for mice. This includes helping with basic care tasks, such as checking on their health and daily welfare.
- Work alongside experienced staff and learn about different lab techniques, like administration and sampling, advanced imaging, and observing experimental processes.
- Take part in workshops and mini training sessions to build skills like communication and possibly get hands-on experience with tasks such as sample collection and lab administration.
About the team
Our facility focuses on the care and wellbeing of lab animals and provides training on important techniques and legal guidelines. You’ll also get to see our advanced imaging equipment, like PET, CT, and MRI scanners, which we use to study detailed anatomy and body functions. This gives you a look into how imaging is used in biological research.
What to expect
This placement is designed to be hands-on and interactive, giving you a real sense of the work we do in our department. You’ll start with an introduction and induction to the facility, learning about the animals and the role of animals in biomedical research. We encourage you to be active and engaged and to bring plenty of enthusiasm!
You’ll also be expected to act professionally and respectfully in all parts of lab operations, especially when it comes to animal care.
Additional information
- Dress Code: You’ll need to wear protective clothing, including a lab coat, as part of your PPE (personal protective equipment). This helps keep both you and the animals safe.
- Supervision: You’ll be guided by our team, who are experienced in working with students on placements. They’ll make sure you have a safe and supportive learning experience.
We look forward to welcoming you and hope this placement gives you a valuable and memorable insight into our work!
