Programme overview

We are excited to offer an opportunity for Year 12 students to gain hands-on experience within our Academic Development Department. This work experience placement will provide insight into the key administrative processes that support postgraduate students who are undertaking degrees in Medical Science at the University of Cambridge. Our work placement participants will gain a real understanding of how educational and research programmes are managed in a leading scientific research institute.

What you will do

During the placement, students will have the chance to:

  1. Observe and participate in:
    • Supporting the team with recruitment and induction processes for incoming postgraduate students.
    • Assisting with administration for the Undergraduate Summer Research Programme
  2. Work alongside professionals to learn about:
    • The full postgraduate student lifecycle—from recruitment and induction to assessment, examination, and ongoing student development.
    • Administrative functions supporting the training, development, and overall experience of students within a world-class research institute.
    • The planning and coordination involved in events such as the Institute’s Education Programme in Uganda.
  3. Engage in hands-on projects, including:
    • Assisting with the creation and delivery of student communications.
    • Planning ahead to map out milestones, programmes and events within the forthcoming academic year.
    • Reviewing existing resources for student wellbeing support.

About Academic Development

Our team plays a vital role in supporting and enhancing the academic experience of current and future postgraduate students at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CRUK CI). We manage processes throughout the student journey, ensuring all students have access to the resources, training, and support they need to succeed.

Key areas we focus on include:

  • Student Recruitment and Induction: the selection, admission and onboarding of PhD and Master’s students at the University of Cambridge, who will be undertaking their degree at CRUK CI.
  • Training and Development: providing supervisory support and learning opportunities that foster both academic and professional growth.
  • Assessment: supporting students to achieve success in their mid-course and final examinations.
  • Student Experience: Enhancing students’ time at the Institute, and ensuring their wellbeing within a vibrant academic and professional community.

  • Dress Code: casual office wear
  • Supervision: work placement students will be supervised by Anna Kasket, Academic Development Partner.
